I've been using Slackware for multimedia production for 6 or 7 years now, and while there's upfront investment to build many of the applications you intend to use, I can honestly say that the stability and reliability is second to none.

Basically: be your own package maintainer, managing your mission-critical apps with build scripts, and apply only security updates during the life span of your OS release.
