      Would it change the social psychology of social media if we replaced the terms "follow" and "followers" in the UI with "listen" and "listeners", or "read" and "readers", or some other set of terms with a less ... well ... culty ring to them?

         @strypey Do you mean… subscribers? That's what it's called in GNU social anyway.

            How about 'listeners' for twitter; after all, the 'tweet' is an auditory allusion.

               @davehunt So is "toot", by the way :-).
               But "post", "notice", "dent", "quip" don't have that effect.
