I'm having a hard time with the French Revolutionary residual anti-monarchism dripping from Stephen deYoung's Old Testament deep dive.

How do you feel? Is God simply saying to Israel, "you will not replace me with an earthly King", or is he saying, "Monarchy is always a terrible political system"?

@SLRock It's got to be the former, as God himself is King and the perfect government is His Monarchy reigning forever. The issue in the children of Israel calling for a king is clear in scripture. It's that they were rejecting God's kingship over them and demanding they have a man as king. They were unwilling to wait for the God/Man Jesus to rule and even rejected Him when he arrived. deYoung is progressive and doesn't even know it.
