@gzt @nsaphra I put off learning emacs for years because of its enormous surface area, but eventually got sucked in by calc-mode.

That's when I found that although the surface area is huge, almost every emacs based application (and 100% of the good ones) is structured so that you only have to learn pieces of it at a time. The height of the learning curve is huge but the slope is gentle, genuinely shockingly so.
