Jim@fribbledom When Steam for Linux came out I really immersed myself in it, and didn't update my hardware for ages. I had a Phenom 965 and 550ti which wasn't a lot, but it ran every Linux flagship title just fine.
I also had a Windows partition and observed the same thing you did; performance tended to improve in most titles over their lifetime.
