I'm getting seriously overwhelmed by my project backlog.

I'm not sure if I should just drop everything and start with a clean slate, or try to reorganize or what, but right now I'm just thrashing between things in wait states and not really getting anywhere...

@jjg Triage your projects. What's essential and what can be shelved.

@jjg It might be useful to at least start with an inventory if you don't already have one. Pick some things that are "close enough" to shippable state and just ship them, and pick a couple of other things to put on indefinite hold?

Starting over from scratch seems like a sure way to get back into the same position.

I do this exercise any time I feel like I'm similarly stuck:

        - List all of my current projects
        - List what status they are in
        - Make notes about them (an elevator pitch, a slightly longer description)

And then, as silly as this sounds, I read through the list and see what I would feel bad about not doing.

Anything that I want to do stays, anything I don't want to do goes on another list for me to re-consider at a later date.

I do it about once a month.

I think part of my problem is that I bounce between projects that I think are most important and others that are more achievable :)

I tend to fill the gaps in my time/budget/knowledge with small projects that seem doable but now even the small ones are dragging..

I think I just need to finish something for a change.

When I say "feel bad" here I don't mean it from a guilt perspective.

It's about the projects that I feel excited to work on.

It changes from month to month, but it's rare that I go more than a few days without making at least some progress.

      @jjg idea debt!
IME, taking the time to plan is helpful.

@jjg I found that the thing that most helped me with that was starting a daily meditation practice. The problem in my case wasn't that I had too many projects but that I wasn't organized, at a mental/emotional level; your description fits it perfectly. I'm still not doing that well but the difference is notable

@kragen I had a fairly regular meditation routine a long time ago; maybe it’s time to get back to that?
