huge interconnected communities work every day, friend chosa! for example, the international community of amateur radio operators is well known for its solid community of volunteers who help in times of crisis or need by keeping up with their hobby.

@chosafine now, it isn't easy, and nor should global reach necessarily be the goal of a community, but it can be done.
Oh, and how do the hams do it? mostly by being a friendly federation of smaller more localized organizations which in turn are friendly federations of even smaller even more localized organizations ;)

hams will all work together when shit hits the fan, sure, but oh my god the fediverse is so much more civil and less backstabby, and more community-focused than self-focused
