It seems flat sites would also make a lot of things harder (but maybe not impossible) or error prone as well -- things like versioning and quick roll-back, collaboration, facilitating multiple users with different privileges, allowing someone to approve posts before they are visible on the site, extensibility, rich text editing with images, etc.
A CMS, be it WordPress or something else, seems an ideal way to manage a blog or web site.
