There is this concept in the Nordic countries called the Law of Jante:

"The Law of Jante (Danish: Janteloven) is a code of conduct known in Nordic countries, that portrays doing things out of the ordinary, being overtly personally ambitious, or not conforming, as unworthy and inappropriate."

What it actually boils down to in practice is that people will try to keep you down if you do good things that make other people look bad, especially if you have the audacity of taking credit for it.

For example, I don't think it's very popular that I have been known to show up at work very early and joke about being lonely in the office.

It's not that I'm there early to impress anyone, but it feels like a wasted opportunity to not let anyone know. In my innocent summer child world, being early is a good thing and letting people know should get you a pat on the shoulder. I usually get one from the boss, and that's the problem, I suspect. It makes everyone else look bad.

I don't agree with this zero sum game way of thinking, though. My gain isn't your loss.
