   controversial take ; the spire of notre dame was created by an architect in the the 19th century it looked bad didnt fit the style of the original medieval construction and shouldnt be replaced

      According to Wikipedia, the spire was a 19th c. reconstruction of the original which had been removed in the 18th c.

      "Instead, he proposed to rebuild the original medieval spire and bell tower over the transept, which had been removed in 1786 because it was unstable in the wind."
