Every time a huge amount of collective effort is put into something that won't really help millions, such as those Thai kids who were trapped in a cave, or the spire of the Notre Dame, someone will inevitably lament that they wish such time and money was put into helping the poor or some such thing, and this will then inevitably annoy other people.
But they're right. We are simple novelty seeking creatures who can't walk and chew gum at the same time. We only care if it's placed in front of us.
