    Why do people insist on "cloud" storage rather than just getting a machine that actually meets their needs?

    There is no such thing as the cloud.  Just other people's computers.

      @maiyannah For server hosting, it is because of the price difference between a VPS with tebibytes (tera-binary-bytes) of disk space and getting one with less storage and using S3/Wasabi/whomever. I think part of the problem is attempted permanence: storing old media from remote instances can lead to unbounded storage growth. We need to recognize that local media is more important than remote media, and that we can place limits on both.

        @lnxw37a2 cloud hosting is extremely cost inefficient compared to just colocating even a consumer level computer with 1 or 2TB drive ... its ridiculous.
