damn, i knew installing GNOME with this fresh install would be a mistake. wanted to make a change up from my usual xfce, but this experience is hot garbage.

going to do another fresh install tomorrow with a different de, any suggestions of a non-tiling wm?

@thurloat KDE Plasma is the jam! It's stable, beautiful, and fast. It's memory footprint is actually even lower than that of xfce.

#Fedora #KDE spin is my favourite implementation of Plasma, though I'm sure a stock install on any solid distro would be on par with it (it's very close to stock).

      #linux #unix

@michelamarie my biggest issue with kde is all the unfamiliar to me K prefix applications and how tightly they integrate.

to be fair i havent used it in yeaaarrs, maybe ill give it another shot.

@thurloat Yah. No need to worry about those.

The Qt/KDE applications are great but you can use any applications you want to, and GTK integration in KDE is fantastic now -- one wouldn't be able to tell that a GTK program wasn't Qt-native unless, perhaps, they had a very keen eye.

For example, I mostly use Libreoffice and Firefox (both GTK). I also use Konsole (which I love, but again, you can use any terminal emulator), VSCodium, Nextcloud, some cross-platform chat apps, and occasionally KWrite and Dolphin.

Most of the time, I only use a web browser or two, Konsole, and maybe VSCodium.

I should also mention that KDE applications are quite intuitive. You'll become familiar with them in no time. 🙂

@michelamarie posting from KDE on Arch. Thanks for the tips, the GTK integration and KWin scripts are pretty nifty for customizing and keeping applications behaving the way they're supposed to.

I usually use Terminator for terminal, does Konsole have native splits? or to you have to use a multiplexer?
