Is "technical debt" better thought of as "unpaved roads?"
You can walk a dirt path more quickly than you can pave it, but that doesn't scale when it turns into your daily commute.
You'll never get race car speeds on an unpaved road, only a lot of flat tires.
Even after it's paved, a road needs regular maintenance. And you can't repave it without slowing down or stopping traffic.
