fwiw, blurhash as mastodon implements it does not actually have to be implemented that way. it can offer more, or less, visual resolution, as it works based on sampling individual points of the image for their chroma and luminance. the strategy for choosing these points is based on scanning the image for areas of majorly differing chroma and/or luminance. the more points there are, the more visual resolution provided.
