i remember reading here somewhere that Google is in extinguish phase (on a few projects), but I'm not quite sure that's what their strategy is.
it's more like "control" imo
they've already pulled it off on android, it's almost impossible to use without play services and totally owned by them (im running a GApps-less phone, but its not for everyone and is a huge risk even then)
it's happening with chromium/gmail rn, with the ban of addons, locking of api, proprietary additions to open protocols, walling it off entirely from everyone but themselves
up next is kubernetes and go; i can tell you now it's not going to be pretty
their strategy is: "embrace open core first, exclusive control later" on a surprisingly high number of projects they don't can
just another morally bankrupt tech firm co-opting open source for their own gain. they're just as bad as (amazon is)/(Microsoft was) but better at managing their perception among developers.
