    Remote code interview tooling

We interviewed a candidate remote today, and we used a collaborative code editor, the kind where you can see everybody's cursors and everyone can edit. It was a good start, but also a bit awkward. Our examples were simple enough that we could act human compilers, and the interview is more about the conversation and asking questions than it is about the code as such, but still it would have been much better if the candidate would have been able to press "Run" at any time and get machine feedback.

repl.it has a Multi-Player Mode, has anyone tried it? I love that repl.it supports multiple files with names. I believe all involved parties need to register accounts. I guess we could create a throwaway account for the candidate, so they don't have to.

It would be perfect if there is a free software thing out there with paid hosting.

@clacke Interesting. If the interviewer requires me to code rather than go from my resume, i end the interview. i find that absolutely unacceptable.

it would be a step beyond acceptable if i had to install something or asked to use a website that requires no ad/cookie blockers.

i'd have to be hungry to allow either.

@clacke Darn you! Now I can't go back to sleep before I research the topic :)

I'll let you know if I change my mind.

@clacke Ok. I found the sentences that remind me of why I find it unacceptable. If fit into the latter category quoted below.

"For those who administer coding tests, please reconsider what you’re doing. For junior developers, they’re fabulous tools. But for anyone who has a body of code samples all ready to go, ask for one. Ask a few technical questions that require code in an interview. And make your decision based on how they think, how they learn, and how competent they are."
