Personally, I think I would just rename it instead of suffering these repeated pile-ons where well-meaning people call the developers abusive names every few months. I'm sure the developers meant no harm when naming it, but we learn as we grow. In the US, there are still places with slurs as names, but we're slowly renaming them. Likewise, we can rename software once we become aware that the name is offensive to some group.
For non-devs, use something else if naming is an obstacle. It isn't like you don't have to force yourself to wrestle with its interface anyway. If enough people stop using it, someone will eventually create a replacement (or fork the original with a different name and hopefully a better interface).
As for the harassment that GIMP devs are experiencing, be aware that people that will harass GIMP's devs over a naming disagreement will also harass you when they disagree with you. Take note of who those people are and avoid them.
