as an immigrant to the UK who never really cared to learn to speak like a native, i'm sometimes asked "where are you from?"
and recently i started answering with "Poland, you?", which seems to put people off guard?
and then i ask them more questions, of the kind i would normally be asked myself, like "oh, so you've been living here your whole life?"
which usually leads to a nice small talk but also normalises the idea of us being equals instead of you being my fucking host
