Garrett LeSage@claudiom: I came across something which drastically sped up fingerprint unlocking again on my #OnePlus #6T: clearing the cache of "Ambient Display".
It's under system settings > apps > all apps > menu in the top right, show system apps > ambient display > clear cache.

I didn't believe it would work, but it did. And it worked really well. Unlocking speed is like new again, and I didn't have to retrain fingerprints for it. Yay!
