@perloid I have taken to cutting small patches of the clover rich 'grassy areas' and giving it to the hens. But, not too much, given your 'crop bound' story. -

@chalkahlom Sounds like a good idea. If you let them onto such an area they'd strip it all in my experience (and dig it up), but it'd take a while. If you cut it for them they can eat without having to "forage" so they can consume much faster, and in my anecdote one of them did with fatal consequences, as you know! Also the bad effects might depend on grass type, length, toughness, etc. So taking it easy might be the best way to go.

@chalkahlom Very true. As a kid I didn't realise this, and so we had "death by greed" in the chicken population.
On the plus side I got to watch the Vet as he dissected the dead chicken.
