The signature foods of various places I've travelled are available, at a higher level of quality, in my home town.
Belgian waffles? My wife makes 'em better, as does the (possibly defunct) local waffle cart.
Portugese custard tarts? My favourite local Portugese bakery makes them better than any I had in Portugal.
Currywurst? To be fair, it's street food and I only had one in Germany, but a local sausage and beer place makes it better than the one I had in Frankfurt.

Exception: Frankfurt green sauce is incredible and I've literally never seen it on a menu outside of Frankfurt. Same goes for the handkasse (literally, hand cheese, a type of unaged, slightly sour cheese native to Frankfurt).
Honestly, despite its reputation as a sleepy, corporate city, Frankfurt had some damn good food and very cozy, unpretentious restaurants.

When I travel, a big part of the draw is food and drink, regardless of how close or far the destination is.
Like, going to Trier, Germany, was 25% about Marx, 10% about the ancient Roman ruins, and 65% about the potato restaurant (Kartoffel Haus, I think it was called) and the place that served first century Roman dishes (they don't translate well to a modern Canadian palate).

@ink_slinger anywhere I travel just have interesting food experiences and access to a used bookstore. Food is the main thing though.
