I've just posted a link to a song by Gerry & The Pacemakers. This got me thinking about the word "pacemaker". At the time the group was formed, late 1950s, a pacemaker was someone who set the pace in a race, usually in middle and long distance running.

Nowadays, if you mention pacemaker most people will probably think of the device used to regulate heart beats.

There is still a connection, as Gerry & the Pacemakers were a *beat* group. 😃
