ignoring all the horribleness around it, I think under milder circumstances this would actually be a fair point. I. e. you're taking some shady money but you don't offer reputation laundering in return.

Of course in the case of Eppstein this is not just shady money, it's crazy rapists money, so you better stay away from that as far as possible.
