@adam So I set up a 5.1 surround system years ago for my parents - but they never used it.

So I turned it on for them today and they can hear the tv better at a lower volume. Yes it's certainly partly the lack of center channel that makes dialogue low for some people

Also I think commercials are mixed in stereo as they know their customer base better - hence many being louder sounding than the actual programming
