As for KDE not shutting down, make sure user is in the 'power' group. Here are the groups my default user is in:
users lp wheel floppy audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev scanner

Not sure why copy/paste wouldn't work. Make sure your wife is using the same file manager between operations; maybe even remove Thunar and Konqueror so that Dolphin is the only choice.
