@maenad i like them most when they reflect a chaotic, carefree, and truly alien kind of juxtaposition to the mundane. fantastical and connected with nature in a way humans are. but completely unpredictable. some nice. some bad. but all have a sort of natural wisdom or affinity. for this reason, i think D&D is a good canvas for a fun time with fae, but it depends on the DM. i like old stories of dullohans a lot also. and anything like dryads, which aren't fae but... i like those kinds of archetypes.
