random thoughts on "joining":
maybe "find an instance to join on the fediverse" is short-term workable but ultimately the wrong paradigm to teach, and a better paradigm to emphasize is is "set up your own or know someone in your close circle of friends who operates one"
considered from that perspective, it's important to minimize setup/maintenance pain and to decouple identity from domains (important in general, but especially for the present, where ICANN can be sketchy and dynamic DNS is technical arcana)
nothing I've said here is new -- I just wanted to re-emphasize it. I know @maiyannah, @bob, @lain, "Link", "mediaType"=>"text/html", "href"=>"https://macgirvin.com/channel/mike"}" class="u-url mention">@mike have all made this point at some time or another-

does anyone remember reddit on april fools day a couple years ago?
People were placed in a chat room and could vote to grow the room or not. An optimal size seemed to emerge.
It'd be interesting to place new users onto a newly spawned instance…

@ninjawedding This only works if you know someone or have the know-how/money/time to set your own up... I imagine that it's not so simple that you can just set an instance up on the spot. You have to keep on top of it and know how to code. There are times when new changes cause things to be buggy too. Then what do you do?
While I like the decentralised mentality where people have their own instance, I don't think it is the solution... that it would work well in reality. Most people aren't the tech-type so you would limit yourself. I came here not having a friend here... so where was I to go but one of the big instances that got mentioned? I didn't know about the fediverse then. People had to explain it to me. Perhaps the fediverse already works as it's going to. Some people will branch off into their own, and others will remain on one of the bigger instances.
I like to encourage people having more than one instance myself. I'm on a few although this is my main. It has come in handy when things went down. -

I would like to add that people should think about their account a lot more like e-mail than facebook/twitter (noone knows XMPP)
