Americans tend to be quite suspicious of other languages, so often object to children learning (when it would be both sensible and cognitively advantageous). The nativist anxieties and cultural tenuousness often conglomerate superficial shibboleths. Speaking proper ‘Murican is often a prerequisite for privilege as much as race. So likely “English” class fills the time (and notably poorly).
