Alex@sixohsix @masu I don't think it maters that much in English, it only indicates that you don't know about the country that much and it's OK.
It matters way more in Russian because using different articles in Russian has been used to deny country and its people's identity.
When speaking in Russian, as I attempt to translate this literally, and someone says 'on the Ukraine' this means trouble, the regular article is 'in the Ukraine'.
