@cosullivan @gemlog media companies are desperately trying to preserve their antiquated business model of artificially created regional markets and are trying additional means of geolocation besides IPs.
Maybe there are cookies or localstorage data hanging around giving out your location. Also with mobile devices they could be doing GPS, and maybe doing browser sniffing to get the locale settings of your device's OS, etc. via the browser Geolocation API.
It's all pretty crappy really.
