Even if someone has "good" books on their shelf it doesn't actually mean they understood (or even read) them. It could be entirely about signifying that they are the type of person who owns the "right" books and are therefore "smart."
Hell, it could be specifically intended to help them get laid by the "I won't fuck anyone who doesn't own books" crowd.
