I went on another mushroom walk in the woods near my house and found what I think is some fresh turkey tail (Trametes versicolor). It fits all of the right descriptive characteristics. The only thing that gives me pause is that the info here says:

    4) Is the fresh cap whitish to grayish?

    Yes: See Trametes hirsuta.

However, that same page has pictures of gray caps as examples of T. versicolor! WTF?

In either case, I brought some home to get a culture from. Unlike a typical mushroom these are about the thickness of cereal box cardboard and have the texture of . Hopefully the standard cloning techniques still work. I guess as a backup plan I can try for a spore print.
