8 months ago I tried to inoculate some fresh oak logs with shiitake, but I wasn’t really properly equipped, and it was about 3 months later in the year than is optimal. They’ve been laying outside on some cinder blocks since then, and I haven’t seen any signs of colonization. They’re not a total lost cause, but they’re iffy.

I decided to bury them standing upright, as contact with the soil can help with water uptake and retention. Just for shits I also dumped a quart of fresh oat spawn in each hole. I figure it can’t hurt. At this rate though, if anything’s going to happen it won’t be until next year. In the meantime I’m on the lookout for some new logs to hopefully do it right this time.
