I want to do a bit of research on opinions on federation for my #decentwebeu project. I'm digging for arguments in favor of decentralising. Please boost and/or answer any of these questions:

    1) How aware are you of the federated nature of this network in your day-to-day use?

    2) Which, if any, concepts of federated networks do you find challenging, confusing or foreign?

    3) Why are federated networks "better" than centralised social networks (silos)?

(The last question is biased, roll with it)

      1) hardly at all beyond the background knowledge that without the federation I would be all alone in the toot-lab

      2) none

      3) spreads the effort required to keep the platform viable across multiple service providers making the platform more resilient overall

      1. Very

      2. Due to the nature of blocking and other factors it's not always possible to see a complete thread for a conversation. I expect that some of the time this causes me to respond to things without context.

      3. More robust to censorship and advertising. Better fitted to the real underlying social relations. Avoids "one size fits all" forcing users into social relations which they don't want, aka self-determination. More user-focused and directed development. More resistant to tightly coupled network effects of malevolent actors which happens in centralized systems.

@zatnosk 1. Very aware, mostly due to "who federates with whom" drama. 2. Federation makes search more difficult and (as it's implemented now) causes problems with data consistency (eg. can't see old toots from newly followed accounts etc) 3. Censorship resistance, possibility of staying in same network but leaving badly managed instances (compare with Twitter being an entire badly managed network)
