Finally managed to get my external monitor working with my laptop. (In other words, I restarted enough parts of my system that it managed to display properly.) So I have two usable screens now. Though it's a bit strange because the external monitor is physically bigger, but lower resolution, than my laptop screen, so everything looks huge on it.
