both bullying and celebrity bashing have always been a thing. the role of political correctness stuff is to become a socially-acceptable motive for mocking and excluding people, so that when it happens more people join in and fewer people disagree
and, if we're talking about the us, it's had pc stuff for a long while, but previously it was mostly only cared about by older generations (stuff like "no swearing on t.v."). the current form is different because younger generations are joining in as well, meaning more bullying among kids
extreme end of this spectrum is blasphemy law with death penalty and public executions/witch hunts, though long way to go still to bring that stuff back

France and England has those back now. Except it's not named blasphemy but it's "grossly offensive".

We are not far from it, or it simply took another form, in a way that persecuted people can't find or keep any jobs anymore or even individual work on platforms (patreon for example).
It's not a death penalty per say but it's a form of harassment that cannot make people live.
