The web is a great place, but a lot of tech companies take advantage of people's casual knowledge of it.

If I had to give one piece of advice moving forward for anyone who is on the web it's own your shit.

Yes, you'll have to pick up some new skills, but the long term benefits of controlling your identity on the web makes it a no brainer.

@are0h I arrived at this realization around about 2010. I had lots of content on lots of different sites and I thought it's about time I take control of this and try to back it all up. Even back then it was becoming obvious that Terms of Service were being used to close people's accounts on things in a very arbitrary way and with no real accountability. Then I saw the Eben Moglen "freedom in the cloud" talk, and the rest is history.

@bob I hear you, man. And based on how FB and Twitter are treating their public, it's only getting worse.

For me, I'm tired of asking these places to change. They just don't give a shit. So, I'll just do my own thing.

This is the 21st century. We do not need any of them.

It's not going to happen overnight, but slowly begin to lessen your need for external services like Google, Twitter, FB, etc.

There are very viable alternatives for all of these sites. And a lot of them are free. Especially if you know how to run your own server.

It just takes a little know how and effort to learn how it all works.
