            @lain Voter registration in the US expires and the requirements vary depending on the state.
 Personalausweis is an internal passport, in the US that function is mostly covered by a Social Security Number.
 These things are hard to compare.
 But also, it is odd to take money from a citizen for an internal passport.

              I'm only familiar with California's voter registration, but mine hasn't ever expired. I do have to re-register whenever I change addresses (or political parties, but I'm currently "decline to state" which frees me from all of those).

 What a contrast, a Social Security Number which is barely anything and voter registration which is a bit much.

                  @xrevan86 We also have state ID cards, which are usually also driver's licenses. That's what is used for identification purposes almost everywhere.
