Sad news. The Arecibo radio telescope is set to be decommissioned and demolished after a couple of cable failure left it in a state of impending total collapse. https://nu.federati.net/url/278123 [www theverge com]

I visited a couple of years ago. It is truly an amazing place. Because the area is sort of remote, and because of the size of the dish, the #Arecibo radio telescope had unparalleled clarity and strength of reception. Goldstone is a wonderful facility, but it isn’t the same.

A sad end for the 57-year-old telescope.

It wouldn’t be the same, but what if people with always-on high-speed Internet connections could buy a small dish and plug it into their routers, so that NSF could build a nationwide or even global “virtual radio telescope”

Can we just blame Mr. Bond?
Maybe get MI6 to pay for repairs?
