My dream external HDD case:
-Individual units
-Cooling via Fan
-Fan control for temperature regulation
-Gel bed for the hdd (like the antec mx1)
-Stackable or rackable units
-Primary E-Sata
-Secondary USB 2.0
-Onboard badblock and smartmontools controlable via a lcd display
-Aluminum case
Sadly this does not exist at all.

@mangeurdenuage Looks like you just volunteered for a new project.

@mangeurdenuage That does sound great.

I forgot to add dust filter. But yes it would help me a lot and other people who diagnosis hardware often.
I would like a similar tool for a external memtest86+ RAM (DIM and soDIM) testing system.
-Don't need a full PC
-Can't scan 100% of all blocks (no 4MB and more reserved by the GPU or Intel ME)
-Permits to know if it's the RAM or the motherboard itself that is faulty via elimination deduction.

Can scan.

And a way to detect that it is dirty.

That's the job of the fan control. When temp rises up and you get an alert that means that you have to clean the filters.

The idea is to get it before it overheats in the middle of something critical like backing up.
Also, while your building this I would add LiOn or other battery as a UPS.
