Also noted that #Samsung #Health is about to start requiring an account after an update scheduled for 2021-01-21. I suppose I can block updates, but I think I’ll just remove the app and schedule the replacement of the Samsung watch, since I’m not aware of a public interface that would allow a non-Samsung app to connect to the watch and receive the information.

AFAIK, #Fitbit & #Garmin both require online accounts to use any of their fitness tracking functionality. (I could continue to use the watch’s count and manually summarize things.)

Maybe I can find one of the old mechanical step counter pedometers again. I had a friend that used one when we went on hikes when we were in junior high school. He compared its measurements with trail signs, and they were in the same ballpark.

Thing is, I don’t even know where he got one back then. Even thrift stores wouldn’t have them today. Maybe there’s an army-navy surplus store with an online presence. I’m sure the army would have had something like that back in the day, before everything was GPS-linked.

I use this one and it seems to be pretty accurate.

Not sure if it matters but I usually keep my phone in a front pocket when not sitting.

@lnxw48a1 I believe you're right for the consumer fitbit/garmin devices.

I would quite like a decent consumer grade fitness watch that could just burp over CSVs on demand.

I have the Fitbit Versa 2 - smartwatches really aren't that awesome IMO. it's mostly a heart monitor and sleep tracker for me.
