I believe it's a combination of several factors that make Israel a strategic US outpost in the Middle-East. By proxy it allows the US to threaten Iran, secure oil fields, keep a firm grip in the Middle-East, feed the US military-industrial complex and possibly pander to the American Jewish vote, while not risking a single American soldier.
