Even if it was all true, Assange is not a US citizen, and AFAIK, he did not enter US soil at or after the time of the alleged events. Thus, I contend that the US has no jurisdiction over Assange.
USDOJ is not trying to extradite the head of the Russian GRU spy agency for documented criminal acts against US entities, so they obviously agree that there are limits to US authority.
they wouldn't get away with demanding Russian authorities to jail and extradite that person either. Russia isn't as inclined to bend over to the US empire as so many European governments
