    heh, I'd never realized how much the apparent plausibility of that story decayed over time. I mean, I've long realized that if you go up the atmosphere it gets colder, and you wouldn't have lift any more long before you get close enough to the sun for it to get warmer, even if you had enough strength in your arms to keep yourself alift. my new realization was that, if you could actually get close enough that wings would melt, the gravitational pull from earth would likely be negligible, and you'd be far more likely to be pulled into the sun instead, rather than fall in the sea. still, it was pretty good as far as extrapolating cause-and-effect within the boundaries of knowledge available at the time
