in a democracy, (non-corrupt) politicians don't represent truth, but the people who elected them. the press doesn't publish truth, but the agenda that its owners wish to push to influence the represented and ultimately the policies set by the representatives. quite often, scientific truth finds itself in minority positions, and ruled out by dominant agendas. that sucks, but unless we're willing to give up democracy, we need to learn how to do a better job at communicating despite the various forms of pressure
