AFAIK a TV (in pt and es, TV sounds like "watches you") nowadays gets subsidized through surveillance and ads

@lxo I don't know if 'subsizidized' is the right word. I think the companies are double dipping: charging the buyer full price, then surveilling them and selling their data. Double the money for a lot less than double the work.

And I say that because of Apple -- Macs and iDevices continue to be some of the higher priced devices in general distribution, yet Apple still does both of the above to increase its already sky-high profits.

Admittedly, it has been a while since I've purchased a television. Maybe the giant screens that people are buying are subsidized. Are the wall-sized units under $200? Or are they still in the thousands of dollars?

they are not as expensive as plain monitors
similar screens, more features (misfeatures, really), lower price amounts to either subsidizing the items of lower price, or charging a premium for the others, which adds up to a distinction without a difference IMHO. a competitive market would supposedly quickly do away with artificial premiums, so I'm betting on subsidizing through post-sales abuse, similar to printer and ink business
