I'm going to give you an answer by reduction to the absurd: What do you think a society not based on mutual trust would look like? You would likely have to know how to make everything you eat and use regularly, like food, tools and shelter because you wouldn't trust anyone else providing them. Money would not exist as the coins and bills' materials are worth less than their face value. Trade would be exceedingly complicated without trust.
Sure, there are breaches of trust in this society, and most of them already are illegal like defamation, theft and murder. But for the most part, we do trust each other.
