Matrix.org@spongycake @owner fwiw, Matrix is run by a UK non-profit Foundation (https://matrix.org/foundation), and the founding team set up Element (aka New Vector) as a UK for-profit to keep the lights on. The founding team came originally from two startups, one UK & one French, who were acquired by Amdocs (Israel-based telco supplier) in 2010, and who then funded the first three years of Matrix dev (2014-2017). Amdocs never had any creative control, but we are very grateful that they funded us :)
