@shmibs Collecting this stuff is one of these 30+ man hobbies, like model trains used to be. The monetary aspect is easy to talk yourself into, as these things are valuable and the expectation is that they will keep being valuable into the future, it's easy to convince yourself you'll at least break even if you need to divest yourself from them. Of course, one needs to keep an eye on the market, because model trains is a cautionary tale; these kind of hobby collections appreciate in value until suddenly the entire generation who cared starts dying or loses interest, then it drops to almost zero value.

But anyway, getting rid of it is because getting them was usually assuming things about my personal future: a) I will have more free time in the future to mess with these, b) I will have space in the future to keep them out of boxes where they won't be in the way, c) they won't be a major pain in the ass to move to a new place.

In my case, a) and b) were kind of based on the expectation that I would remain single, so the outlook on those has changed. a) is unlikely to be true until retirement, and b) for 5-10 years.
